Representation

Representation is how media portrays different people, groups, experiences. 

One way of looking at it is by instead of looking at media representation as something that mirrors reality it is something that is creating a new reality.

There are different ways of portraying something depending what the media wants to talk about. For example the same magazine will portray the same person differently depending on the issue.

 Magazine Focus

(when you look at a magazine issue and analyse it - the language they use and how they represent different groups of people- the signs that they have used)

1. Uncut magazine 10th anniversary issue (August 2007) 
- older musicians being represented, mostly male music artist
-using direct address, famous peoples name 
-using music related signs accompanying them 
-the main images being used are old images of artists when they began or became famous 
- most articles reflecting the past

2.Grazia magazine (January 2017)
- younger /middle age women are the target audience 
-articles are mostly about how to dress well, interview with celebrities and gossip
-there are many repeated words such as fashion,beauty,style
-using images of women wearing the lastest clothes and when they are talking about someone there is a current image of them
